Our Need for Salvation

What the Bible says about who we are by nature:

We are sinners - from our beginning

Psalm 51:5  Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?  also see: Romans 1:21, 3:10-12, 18, 20 Ecclesiastes 7:20, Psalm 14:1-3, 53:1b-3, 36:1, 5:12, 7:18, Ephesians 2:1, 3 Genesis 8:21, Job 25:4-6, Luke 11:13, 1 Corinthians 2:14

We are slaves to sin – and unable to free ourselves

John 8:34  Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. (Romans 7:18, 8:7)

We are not blamed for the Sin of Adam and Eve

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.

What is sin?

1 John 3:4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

We sin in what we do

Galatians 5:19-21  The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.

We sin in what we fail to do

James 4:17  Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins. (also see 1 Samuel 12:23)

We sin when … there are things that are not wrong, but we think they are, and we do them anyway

Romans 14:14   But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him it is unclean.

We sin in our thoughts

Matthew 5:21-22  “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’  But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment.” (also see 1 John 3:15)

We sin in our desires

Matthew 5:27-28  “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’  But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (see Colossians 3:5-6)

We sin in our words

Matthew 5:21, 22 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’  But I tell you … Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ [An Aramaic term of contempt] is answerable to the Sanhedrin.  But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.”

Sin Separates Us From God

Isaiah 59:2   But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
