Authentic Christianity
The Christian Creeds

The Creeds  that define Christianity

The three creeds that define Christianity are the Apostles' Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed.

A creed is a summary of authentic Christian doctrines. The word “creed” comes from the Greek “credo,” which means, “I believe”.  There are three “ecumenical” or universal Christian creeds that all truly Christian churches agree with and that define what it means to be authentically Christian: scroll listing the christian creedsThe Apostles’ Creed (dating back to the early 2nd century A.D.), the Athanasian Creed (dating to the 6th Century A.D.) and the Nicene Creed. The Nicene Creed was first written and approved by the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. and later expanded in 381 A.D. by the Council of Constantinople. These creeds are ancient summaries of what historic orthodox Christianity believed. All who believe the doctrines in these creeds are members of authentic Christianity. All who do not so believe are outside of authentic Christianity.

These creeds are not the basis or source of Christian teaching. Scripture alone is the source of doctrine. These creeds are ancient summaries of Christian doctrines that are fully in agreement with scripture and based on Scripture. The following table contains the words of the Nicene Creed, divided into phrases (on the left) paired with Scriptural support (on the right). The same can also be done with the other creeds.

The Nicene Creed

The Nicene Creed was written in defense of the authenic (true) Christian faith.   It's purpose was to clarify more fully the deity of Christ, in order to safeguard the apostles' teaching.
